A former suitor for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced Wednesday that he instead has turned his attention toward landing a Canadian Football League team in Birmingham.

Retired insurance executive Arthur L. Williams said he has filed a formal application to the league seeking an expansion franchise to begin play next season.

Williams will make a formal presentation to the CFL Board of Governors at meetings Jan. 27 in Edmonton, Alberta. Williams, a Florida resident who had been inquired into purchasing the Buccaneers, said he has obtained a letter of intent from Birmingham officials to enter a 10-year lease agreement for Legion Field.

The stadium also serves as a second home field for the University of Alabama. Dr. Larry Lemak, an orthopedic surgeon in Birmingham, would be a part-owner of the franchise and would serve as club president.
