The Canadian Football League Friday announced it will field a new team in Shreveport, the fourth U.S. city to receive a CFL franchise since the league began an expansion south of the border in 1993.

CFL Commissioner Larry W. Smith announced the Shreveport Pirates will begin training camp June 1 and play their first game July 6 in Ottawa.

Shreveport Mayor Hazel Beard and Gov. Edwin Edwards attended the news conference.

What we're selling is a product that is different,” said Smith.

“This league is a high quality product. Nobody compares us with the NFL because we are not the NFL. We're not competing with the NFL but I think you'll like us.”

Smith only Thursday announced a new CFL franchise in Baltimore. The Las Vegas Posse also will begin play next season, joining the Sacramento Gold Miners which began play last season.

A coach was not immediately named for the pirates. The team reportedly has contacted John Huard, head coach of the Maine Maritime Academy and a former CFL and NFL player. He played for the New Orleans Saints.

The franchise was awarded to Michigan businessmen and former owners of the Ottawa Rough Riders, Bernard and Lonie Glieberman. The Rough Riders were sold earlier to week to Ottawa businessman Bruce Firestone.

Mayor Beard and Edwards have raised $3 million in funds to renovate the stadium in the city of 300,000 in north Louisiana.

The addition of the Pirates brings the total of teams in the CFL to 12 for the 1994 season.
